Loeb-Sullivan Grad Student competes in US SAILING's 2009 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship

Lori Berggren (Loeb-Sullivan 2010, seated on the right) was one of three crew members sailing with Skipper Caroline McNally at the prestigious Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship held in Rochester, NY on Lake Ontario. All four sailors are students or work at Maine Maritime Academy. Berggren is a graduate of MMA and is attending Loeb-Sullivan School to earn her Masters degree in Global Supply Chain Logistics. Two MMA freshmen, Sara Lloyd and Hadley Neale, were also on board the J-22 sailboat as crew for this rigorous event against top competition. Skipper Caroline McNally is an adjunct professor at MMA, teaching sailing and yoga. McNally is an accomplished college sailboat racer. Sailing the boat Running with Scissors, McNally and crew finished 27th overall.

Inaugurated in 1985 at the instigation of the US SAILING's Women's Championship Committee, the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship quickly became the premier women's sailing event in the U.S. and worldwide. Held biennially, the event provides women keelboat and offshore sailors high-quality racing and an opportunity to compete with top national and international sailors. US SAILING supports a wide range of sailing organizations, including the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Teams.

MMA gives students an applied hands-on approach...

MMA Hands-on The graduate program at Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) offers a one-year Masters of Science degree in International Business and Logistics. MMA gives students an applied hands-on approach to our academic curriculum. As part of the Fall Orientation for the Masters Program, graduate students and faculty had a fun team-building experience in Castine Harbor learning/remembering what it is like to row a lifeboat.

Maine Maritime Academy honors student-athletes

The Maine Maritime Academy athletic department recognized and celebrated the achievements of Mariner student-athletes at their "Athletic Awards Night" on campus in Castine. Sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletic Director Jim Dyer and Senior Women's Administrator Katrina Dagan presided over the evening's festivities. In total, there were 56 scholar-athlete award winners recognized at the event including 5 dual sport athletes. To be recognized as a Mariner scholar-athlete a student needs to be on the Dean's list academically, and have participated in a varsity sport.

2007-2008 Scheel Scholars

The late Henry A. Scheel of Rockport, Maine was one of America's most respected naval architects and yacht designers. During his long and distinguished career, Mr. Scheel produced more than 250 complete designs which have been utilized by thirty builders of sailboats and other craft in the US and Europe.

To express his high regard for Maine Maritime Academy, in 1994 Mr. Scheel left funds to permanently endow scholarships for students in the three upper classes who best exemplify intellectual curiosity and achievement.

In 2007-2008, one Mariner student athlete in the IBL Program was selected as a Scheel Scholar. She is:

Rebecca Allen: Women's Volleyball. Senior from Bucksport, Maine. Recognized as the Scheel Scholar for International Business and Logistics.

MMA Athletes of the Year

MMA Female Athlete of the Year - Rebecca Allen. Rebecca helped lead the Lady Mariner Women's Volleyball team to a 19-6 record, a North Atlantic Conference championship, and the programs first ever berth to the NCAA Tournament. The senior captain from Bucksport, Maine was a three time NAC All-Star and leaves MMA holding ten school records. In 2006 Allen led the nation in Service Aces Per Game. Along with her athletic accomplishments Rebecca has been a Dean's list student every semester here at MMA and was recently named the Scheel Scholar for the IBL program. Allen was also named to the COSIDA ESPN Volleyball Academic All-American Second Team this past fall and was the recipient of the Phyllis Tenney Community Service Award here on the campus of MMA.

MMA Male Athlete of the Year - Chris Tracy. For his achievements during the fall, the linebacker from Westbrook, Maine was named as the Mariner Football team Defensive MVP. The senior captain also made the New England Football Conference 1st team and was honored as the NEFC Defensive Player of the Year. Tracy was an All-ECAC 1st Team selection this season and throughout his MMA career had numerous NEFC weekly honor roll nominations

MMA International Business & Logistics Student Awarded Scholarship

On April 1, 2008, five $1000 scholarships were awarded to students at New England Roundtable (NERT) partner schools. By providing recognition and support to students, NERT hopes to foster an interest in a career in supply chain and to enhance their professional development. With this scholarship program, the Education Committee of NERT works with these professors at area colleges and universities to recognize students interested in supply chain who excel academically and in extracurricular activities.

Scholarship Winner: Jarred Sternbergh

Jarred Sternbergh, Class of 2010 at Maine Maritime Academy is a candidate for a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in International Business and Logistics. Jarred has consistently earned a place on the Dean's List with a cumulative GPA of 3.45. His strong leadership is shown through his participation in the Regiment of Midshipmen having held the rank of 3/C Training Officer and 2/C Training Officer in Charge. He has also received the Rear Admiral Warren C. Hamm Jr. Leadership Award. Jarred has also held offices as Vice President on the Student Athletes Advisory Committee and Vice Chair of the National Debutante Cotillion Ball. He is a well rounded student who also serves on the Executive Committee of Students in Free Enterprise. Jarred meets the high expectations of his professors and sets the bar high for his peers.

MMA student to attend CSCMP Annual Conference

The New England Roundtable of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals is pleased to announce the award of two trips to area students to represent our Roundtable as Student Assistants at the 2008 Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals Annual Conference, October 5-8, in Denver, Colorado. They will serve as members of the Arrangements Committee. The honored recipients of this award are Northeastern University student Rebecca Harkess and Maine Maritime Academy student Nhuy Tran. The winners of this award are exemplary students that significantly impress their professors.

As a member of the Arrangements Committee, Nhuy will join students representing the other CSCMP Roundtables and have the opportunity to spend 50% of her time attending educational and networking sessions at the conference and 50% of their time supporting the conference logistics. It also serves as an opportunity to connect with the professional community and to gain exposure to current leading edge expertise in supply chain management.

Nhuy was selected by Dr. William DeWitt of the Maine Maritime Academy based on their significant accomplishments:

Nhuy Tran, Maine Maritime Academy Class of 2009 is majoring in International Business and Logistics. Nhuy excels academically as a Dean's List and Honors student. She is Co-President of Student in Free Enterprises, the umbrella organization on campus for logistics organizations. A well rounded student, Nhuy also is a Student Senate Speaker, a member of the Yearbook committee and on the Women's Rugby team. She is a high energy student who balances work and play along with a social conscience exhibited through a history of volunteer work. She has traveled extensively -over 20 countries- and has had many diverse experiences. Her fluency in English and Vietnamese plus her knowledge of French combined with her International Business studies will position her well for a career with a global firm. As a member of the Arrangements Committee, she'll readily relate to the international ambience of the Conference.

Maine Maritime Academy Professor is Fulbright Lecturer, Researcher

CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Professor, Dr. Elaine S. Potoker, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research at the University of Costa Rica in San Jose (San Pedro Montes de Oca) during the first semester of the 2007-2008 academic year. According to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, Dr. Potoker is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who travel abroad annually through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. Under the grant, Dr. Potoker is currently in Costa Rica serving 30% of her time as a guest lecturer in the area of strategic management within University's School of Business Administration. While at the University, she is a member of the "Facultad de Administración de Negocios", a group of 130 professors.

Dr. Potoker's remaining work time is being spent on research in the area of international trade. She is investigating the challenges facing the nation and the region specific to logistics and technology integration and workforce needs with the implementation of the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA). According to Dr. Potoker, DR-CAFTA ratification was an active contemporary political issue in Costa Rica. The country held a referendum in October to decide the question, and it passed by a slim margin. She is currently maintaining a website documenting her experiences as a Fulbright Scholar in Costa Rica. The public is invited to visit the website at:directory.mma.edu.

Recipients of the Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic of professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. Fulbright recipients are among o0ver 30,000 individuals participating in U.S. Department of State exchange programs each year. Dr. Potoker, a professor of business in Maine Maritime Academy's Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics, teaches in the graduate and undergraduate divisions of the School. Originally appointed to the college faculty in 1997, Potoker holds a B.A. degree from State University College, Potsdam, N.Y., an M.A.T degree from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. with focus in public policy and management, international business, and anthropology from The Ohio State University. She is also the author of Managing Diverse Working Styles: The Leadership Competitive Advantage, 2005, Southwest Publishing. The book is currently undergoing a second revision with Routledge Publishing (UK).

Academic All-American Teams

The awards keep rolling in for the Lady Mariners, winners of the North Atlantic Conference regular season and conference tournament. On the same day they were to take the court for their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Regional Champion-ships, MMA had two of their players rewarded for their efforts in the classroom. Nicole St. Pierre (Baileyville, ME) and Becca Allen (Bucksport, ME) (both are International Business & Logistics under-graduate students) were honored as District 1 College Division selections for 2007.

The ESPN Academic All-American Teams were selected by CoSIDA (Sports Information Directors of America) for 5 districts throughout the country. Junior Nicole St. Pierre was a First Team selection, while senior Becca Allen was a Second Team selection. This is the first time in the schools history that any female student-athlete at Maine Maritime has received an Academic All-American award for their efforts on and off the playing fields.

Joining Nicole St. Pierre (pictured left) on the first team was Amanda Morris (MIT; North Potomac, MD), Katie Becofsky (New Palz; Altamont, NY), Carey Demos (Bentley; Bakersfield, CA), Christina Sadowski (Bentley; Salem, NH), Carrie Buchanan (MIT; Carthage, TX), and Rhe-Ann Niles (New Haven; St. Thomas, Barbados).

Joining Becca Allen (pictured right) on the second team was Amanda Hubbard (Ithaca; Horseheads, NY), Lisa Drennan (Wesleyan; Ann Arbor, MI), Jen Shaughnessy (Keuka; Le Roy, NY). Jamie Kraus (Potsdam State; New Paltz, NY), Lauren Flanagan (Adelphi; Boulder, CO), and Dana Hilfinger (Rochester; Ann Arbor, MI)

Allen and St. Pierre were the only recipients honored from Maine and two of only four student-athletes from New England to be selected.
